Inside the Phoenix Active Management Area, most homes are on city or private utility water, but rural pockets across the Valley still run on private domestic wells. Under Arizona law these are usually “exempt wells”: pump capacity of no more than 35 gallons per minute, and in an Active Management Area, new exempt wells are limited to 10 acre-feet of water a year.
Well depths and water quality vary a lot from one side of the Valley to the other, so we never assume. Hard water is common in Arizona groundwater, and scale wears out fixtures, water heaters and pressure switch ports. A water test tells you whether a softener or other treatment makes sense.
Typical calls include no water, pressure that rises and falls, pressure tanks that have lost their air charge and booster pumps on properties fed by a storage tank. Constant pressure systems with a VFD are a popular upgrade for homes that want city-style pressure from a well.
